Paolo Forti . . .
Full professor of Geomorphology at the University of Bologna (Italy). His scientific activity is testified by over 350 papers, mainly devoted to karst geomorphology, speleogenesis and karst hydrogeology. His main field of research is the morphological and mineralogical study of speleothems with the purpose of reconstructing paleo-seismicity, seismotectonics, speleogenetic evolution, paleo-climate and paleo-environment in karst (mainly gypsum) areas. Director of the Italian Institute of Speleology since 1975, responsible of the Karst Section of the Italian Group of "Physical Geography and Geomorphology" since 1984, former president of the Italian Speleological Society (1987-1993), former President of the International Union of Speleology (1993-1997).

Jo De Waele . . .
M.Sc in Geology in 1990 at the University of Ghent (Belgium), PhD in Mineral Prospection at the University of Cagliari in 1995. Associate Professor in Geography and Cartography at the Department of Earth Sciences and Environmental Geology of the University of Bologna Alma Mater. Environmental geology, geomorphology, hydrogeology and palaeoclimate studies in karst areas are his main research domains. The results of these researches have been published in more than 70 scientific papers since 1993.

Philippe Audra . . .

Maître de conferences at the Department of geography of the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis (France). Doctor in geography, he finished his PhD on Alpine Karst at the University of Grenoble in 1993. He was president of the French Association of Karst Scientists (AFK) and is a full member of the Commission Board of Karst hydrogeology and Speleogenesis of the International Union of Speleology (UIS). He's also member of the e ditorial boards of several international reviews such as Karstologia (France), Speleogenesis-the Virtual Scientific Journal (UIS), Die Höhle (Austria), Philippines Journal of Geography and Alpine Karst (USA). His main research fields are karst geomorphology, palaeogeography, speleogenesis, GIS and land management, published in about 90 scientific papers.

José Maria Calaforra . . .
Titular Professor of Geodynamics at the University of Almeria ( Spain ). He has been president of the Spanish Speleological and Karst Science Society (Sedeck) since 1998. After completing his PhD in Geological Sciences he began his research work in the Research Group of Water Resources and Environmental Geology, focussing on geomorphological and hydrogeological karst topics. He is author of more than 150 papers and several books concerning karst and cave speleogenesis. One of the most applied avenues of his current research involves the study of methods for monitoring and control of microclimate in natural caves and its application in the sustainable management of show caves.

Russell Drysdale . . .
Russell Drysdale completed his PhD in 1995 at the University of New South Wales (Australia), where he studied the geomorphology, hydrochemistry and Quaternary history of tufa deposition in the Barkly karst (tropical northern Australia). In 1996, he moved into a teaching position at the University of Newcastle and is now Lecturer in Earth Sciences. His current research interests focus on palaeoclimatology, particularly 'process studies', which investigate the way in which climate information is transmitted to speleothems via cave percolation waters. He is currently working on several speleothem-palaeoclimate projects: a long record of Western Mediterranean-North Atlantic climate change from the Alpi Apuane (Italy); the history of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation from Holocene speleothems at Wombeyan and Cliefden karst (NSW, Australia); and monsoon/Indian Ocean Dipole history at Christmas Island. He runs a speleothem fluorescence laboratory at Newcastle, and is a member of the American Geophysical Union and the Australasian Quaternary Association.

Franci Gabrovšek . . .
Degree in Physics at the University in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1995, PhD at the Department of physics of the University of Bremen, Germany, 2000. Researcher at the Karst Research Institute of SASA in Postojna, Slovenia. His main research includes process modelling of speleogenesis and other karst processes. He is involved in the exploration and study of Alpine cave systems in Slovenia. He is an author of more than 50 papers since 1996, author and co-author of two books on karst modelling and co-editor of Acta Carsologica.

David J. Lowe . . .

Field geologist and geoscientific data project manager, British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham , UK . Geology BSc from Birmingham University and PhD on speleogenesis from Manchester Metropolitan University . Early interests in UK and overseas cave exploration (including expeditions to Crete , the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and the Kingdom of Tonga ) have largely given way to ongoing research interests in the relationship between geology (especially stratigraphy) and speleogenesis, and related issues. Author of many geological maps, scientific papers and book contributions on widely ranging geological and karstological topics. Joint Editor of Cave and Karst Science, and Editorial Board member for Speleogenesis and Evolution of Karst Aquifers, Naše jame , Theoretical and Applied Karstology , and Materials and Geoenvironment . Visiting Research Fellow at the Limestone Research Group, University of Huddersfield , UK ; Research Associate of the Karst Research Institute, Postojna , Slovenia ; Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society; Fellow of the Geological Society of London ; Chartered Geologist.

Arthur N. Palmer . . .
Director of the Water Resources program at the State University of New York, Oneonta, NY, and S.U.N.Y. Distinguished Teaching Professor of hydrology, geochemistry, and geophysics. Ph.D. in hydrogeology from Indiana University. He also teaches a summer field course on Karst Geology for Western Kentucky University at Mammoth Cave National Park.
